GA4 Tip #7 – Configure referral exclusion list

We set up a referral exclusion list for online stores mainly because of payment gateways. Since the payment gateway has a different domain than ours, this is the source from where the customer gets to our thank you page. This way, it happens that Google Analytics takes this source as the last source of conversion and so we have distorted data in the source/medium reports.

Take your payment gateway domain to exclude from UA or select one from this list of most common payment gateways:

  • paypal.com
  • payu.com
  • squareup.com
  • stripe.com
  • paylinedata.com
  • 2checkout.com
  • skrill.com

How to do it:

Admin > Property > Data streams > Click on web > Configure tag settings > Show all > List unwanted referrals

Note: we can also use this option to exclude other traffic (e.g. bot filtering)
